Artificial intelligence is the general name for software that performs tasks which normally require human judgement — reading a document, answering a question, recognising what is in a photograph, deciding which of a thousand records deserves attention. It is a category, not a technology, and almost every product marketed as AI today is built on machine learning.
The distinction that matters commercially is between AI that decides and AI that drafts. Software that drafts something a person then approves is straightforward to deploy, because a human stays accountable for the output. Software that decides on its own needs to be right far more often, needs an audit trail, and usually needs a way for someone to overturn it — which is most of the engineering effort.
When a supplier proposes to "add AI" to a product, the useful question is not which model they will use. It is which specific decision or piece of drudgery is being handed to it, and what happens on the occasions when it gets that wrong.
